69th Republic Day celebrations at Indian High Commission

“India, that is 'Bharat', shall be a Union of States.” Thus reads the opening line of the Constitution of Indian; a document of which its declaration is celebrated on January 26, every year since 1950, when it came into effect.

According to its interpretation, without the states themselves, there is no 'Union, no 'India' and no 'Bharat'.

The highlighted event is celebrated as the nation's gazetted holiday, known as 'Republic Day', and is observed by all nationals across the land.

Republic Day honours the date on which the constitution of India came into effect, on January 26, 1950, replacing the Government of India Act as the governing document of India. People throughout India celebrate with parades, the distribution of sweets, speeches and cultural dances, as part of the on-going festivities.

Last Friday morning (January 26), the Indian High Commission on Frances Baard Street was abuzz with activity. Ladies elegantly draped in saris together with men dressed in nehru suits welcomed the guests. Patriotic songs and a cool breeze filled the air. The well-manicured lawns and colourful flowers at the Chancery, created a garden party atmosphere.

After the unfurling of the Tiranga (Indian Flag) and the singing of the National Anthem, the revered High Commissioner of India, HE Ruchira Kamboj, read extracts from the address delivered by the President of India on the eve of the Republic Day of India 2018.

King Makhosonke of the AmaNdebele Tribe (Mpumalanga) was the guest of honour on this auspicious occasion.

The king said during his speech at the event, “We were invited to tasty, sweet and savoury snacks. The thali of fresh jalebi caught my eye. It is my singular privilege, it is my singular pleasure to compliment and congratulate the High Commissioner and her entourage for their hospitality; Jai Hind.”
