Another truck loses control - residents up in arms

Yet another accident on Military Road has residents from the Agra Street East area up in arms saying “enough is enough.”

These locals are calling for strong measures to be put into place to deter speedsters from over accelerating along these roads, causing accidents and endangering the lives of the community. This, after the accident that occurred on Tuesday, March 6, at around 11am, when a truck driver lost control of his heavy duty vehicle and ended up in a ditch along the roadway.

According to Byron Naidoo of Agra Street East, this was not an isolated incident as nearby residents recall a number of incidents where truck drivers, oblivious to the speed limit, have crashed their vehicles.

Byron continued, “We are tired of motorists who do not respect the rules of the road along these streets. There have been numerous cases where people have been knocked on this road and cars rammed from behind; all because of those road users who don't obey the speed limit. Many of these heavily loaded trucks come from businesses based near Itireleng, often transporting loads of concrete stones which fly out when drivers are driving at high speed. For heaven’s sake, the stones are damaging our windscreens. Very few of the drivers actually even obey the stop signs on these roads," the irate resident claimed.

Byron went on to say that there were schools nearby and that many learners walked along Military Road on their way home. He also claimed that when an accident of this nature did occur, some of the offending drivers, who were under the influence of alcohol, would rush off before the police could get there. "The police need to be on standby in these areas," he added.

Speaking to the Laudium Sun, Ibraheem Dockrat, an emergency personnel member, said that at the time of the accident with the truck on Tuesday, he received a call saying the truck went down the ditch and was also asked to send through an ambulance. He said that the driver was hurt and rushed to Kalafong Hospital but did not sustain very serious injuries, adding that the truck was removed from the scene quickly, and no other cars were involved in the accident. He confirmed that no other individuals were injured.
