Astounding 8 Distinctions: Matric Shining Stars of 2017

Shanay Gungudoo, 18 (Crawford College) of Laudium scored 8 distinctions in English, Afrikaans, Mathematics, Physics, Biology, IT, Advanced Maths Programming and Life Orientation. "I was a bit nervous for a few days ahead of the results but now I am happy. I finally made my family proud. Fulfilling the promise of passing well has been a proud moment for me as my family has powered me on through the year." Shanay is going to the University of Pretoria to study medicine, saying that it was what he had wanted to do all his life."I want to specialise in surgery, which has been a life-long dream of mine." He added that the determination and focus to pass well came from within, and the support from loved ones was treasured.

Mayuri Ramnarain, 18 (Crawford College) of Eldoglen Estate achieved 8 distinctions in English, Afrikaans, Maths, Physics, Biology, IT, Advanced Maths (PRO 6) and Life Orientation. Mayuri said she had made it with the help of her parents and family, and that relief had set in the moment she stepped onto the school premises and realised how well she had done. "I am very relieved," the 18-year-old said after seeing her results in black and white. "The relief comes from how well I performed. My marks are good and they give me a great chance of entry into university. When I started my matric, I struggled a bit because it was a huge adjustment. I was also distracted with the load of work, but I learnt that once you study and prepare well in advance, exams are easy.

I had that drive to be academically inclined. I'm thankful to my parents, especially my father, who is a professor in Education Science at the University of Johannesburg, for teaching me to work hard and how to work independently. He taught me effective ways to learn things. I also learnt a lot from my mom who encouraged me. Everyone in my family was supportive and placed a lot of emphasis on education and working hard," the teen said, adding that she was going to study medicine at the University of Pretoria.

Samira Dos Santos Fanami, 18 (CIS) of Barbara Coetzer Street, Erasmia was also a top achiever, scoring 8 distinctions in English Home Language, Afrikaans First Additional Language, Arabic Second Additional Language, Life Orientation, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and Accounting.

Samira said, “I intend on studying medicine this year, Insha-Allah. I wish to thank the Almighty for giving me the strength to persevere in my studies. Of course my family and teaching staff at CIS were fantastic, giving me all the support throughout the year.”
