Burglars target 'quiet' Centurion neighbourhood

A Centurion family was left completely shaken, after their Highveld home was broken into recently,  while they were away, visiting family for a few days.

Lately, there have been numerous reports of house break-ins in the Centurion area and many residents are now calling for increased visible police patrols in the area.

Recent crime victim, Kogie Naidoo (51), of Logan Avenue, detailed to the Laudium Sun the ordeal that left her family traumatised and no longer able to sleep at night.

"It was on a Thursday morning (November 23), that my husband, my son and I left to visit family in Johannesburg. I left my gate keys with a close neighbour, who normally watches my home and picks up the mail when I am away. On Saturday morning (November 25) at around 10am I received a call from my neighbour who said that our house had been burgled. She informed me that when she went to park her vehicle on Friday night, she noticed that our gate was off the rail, but had placed it back before leaving. Then on Saturday morning, my neighbour noticed that something was definitely amiss. When she looked out through her window, she saw that my son's bedroom curtains had been drawn and that our dining room window was standing wide open. My neighbour immediately called other neighbours and the police."

Kogie recalled, "I immediately left Johannesburg and when I arrived, I found my home in total disarray. These hoodlums had turned my entire house upside down and had taken our TV, jewellery, clothing and other valuable items. They were probably in the house on Friday night, that is why the gate was off the rail. We have worked so hard over the years to accumulate these things and in a matter of hours, these horrible thieves just managed to snatch everything! We are so afraid now that the criminals might return. I cannot even sleep at night!" said the distraught mother.

"Our neighbours and other residents in the area are also calling for police to be more vigilant and visible in the area. We moved from Lotus Gardens to this area, which was once so peaceful and quiet, but not anymore. We cannot continue to live like this, always being afraid, and not knowing when these greedy criminals will strike again,” concluded Kogie tearfully.
