Leon Govender moved to Wespark's Beam Street, from Durban, just a fortnight ago, to start a new life he said, but this past Sunday (June 10), criminal elements smashed their way into his car.
Leon told the Laudium Sun that he was stunned that thieves had struck, even though he had parked his car in his secure property, guarded by dogs.
On the night of the theft, Leon’s wife, Nirvasha, said she was awoken by the dogs barking outside in the yard. She said she looked through the window but did not see anyone near the car, which had been parked a few metres away from their bedroom window.
Leon said, “At around midnight, I went out just to check because the dogs had been barking so much, earlier. That’s when I noticed the doors of my white Toyota Corolla wide open – I am certain I had closed and locked them.
“I could not believe my eyes when I discovered that the thieves had broken a rear side window and stolen my car radio and speakers. These greedy thieves also made off with my tiny tweeter speakers, which I did not think would ever be stolen,” he exclaimed.
But most mind-boggling to Leon was the fact that the thieves had also managed to open the gear-lock he uses to secure his precious car.
“These thieves must have been very professional,” he sighed. “The gear-lock is said to be one of the safest things to lock a car with. I had heard that the crime in Wespark was high before I moved here, but before this incident, I did not really believe it, as I know that crime is everywhere in this country. But being targeted like this, after only two weeks of living here – now that is what I call a real threat. The police seriously need to do something to ensure that local residents are safe here,” he said.
Leon still does not understand how the thieves were able to gain entry to the yard, bypass the dogs and do it all without being spotted, and then also leave without being seen or heard.
“I don’t know if I did the right thing by moving to Wespark,” the disappointed ex-Durban resident said.
Leon Govender moved to Wespark just two weeks ago and has already fallen victim to crime.
Leon’s Corolla was targeted even though it was parked inside his property on Beam Street.
