Locals go potty over potholes!

A group of Laudium residents have had just about enough of the municipality who, they say, is simply turning a deaf ear to their cry for help regarding the numerous potholes in their area.

The residents claim that they have been complaining about the potholes to the municipality since February 2017, but nothing has been done to address the problem.

“Almost every street in Laudium has potholes and this is unacceptable! Some time last year, when the Laudium Sun reported on the matter, the municipality indicated that there was a team working on the roads in Laudium. The so-called team only patched certain roads and on some of the streets, they patched one corner and skipped the next. These potholes are damaging to our vehicles, especially at night when we can't see them!” exclaimed Bengal Street resident, Dinkar Budhai (28), in the presence of local friends who echoed his sentiments.

“What must we, as Laudium residents do, to get the municipality to help us? They are busy repairing roads in other areas, but not in Laudium and not on the Military Road which sees a plethora of traffic at peak times,” an irate Dinkar continued.

"Many local residents use the Military Road to get to Laudium, and this road is just riddled with potholes! My greatest fear is that an unsuspecting motorist may hit the pothole at high speed and lose control of his vehicle, resulting in what could possibly be a fatal crash. We should remedy this to at least safeguard motorists before something tragic happens. I remember about six months ago some of the potholes were covered but these were sloppy jobs as soon after the potholes just resurfaced!” the irate father exclaimed.

Councillor Mahomed Essop said the municipality was committed to ensuring all municipal roads were in good condition. “We are putting in place measures for the maintenance of our roads." Essop said.
