R55 - Cops go all out to nab speedsters

Despite all the warnings of high speed arrests during this past festive period, on the R55, motorists continued to ignore the rules pertaining to speeding. The R55 between Lauduim and the N14 freeway has been declared a hazardous location due to irresponsible drivers contributing to road fatalities, because of their speeding behaviour.

On Tuesday (January 23) at around 19:04, on the R55 near Wierda Road, members of the Gauteng Traffic Police (high speed unit) arrested a 52 year old engineer from NS Designs in Sunderland Ridge, while he was travelling at an average speed of 188km/h in an 80km/h zone, with his BMW X6 M- series.

The driver claimed he was rushing to church for a prayer session and he was late. Unfortunately, he was prevented from continuing with his journey to church, was arrested on the spot and taken to the Wierdabrug SAPS.

He was formally charged with reckless driving, exceeding the speed limit of 80km/h. Bail has not been determined as yet and the accused will be detained until an investigating officer is available.

Drivers on the R55, be warned; the Gauteng Traffic Police's High Speed Unit will continue to patrol this route to combat the battle against speeding. Irrespective of your social status, zero tolerance will be maintained.
