Despite several calls made by the community to authorities directly, and through the Laudium Sun in previous editions, over the past few years, regarding the reportedly ‘unbearably loud row emanating from Itireleng taverns’, residents say little to nothing has been done to hush the roaring revellers.
Residents are still up in arms about this matter, years later. "It's getting to the point where we just cannot stand the daily noise, anymore," said irate Bengal Street, Ext. 3 resident, Thiven Naidoo (30).
"Previously it was only over the weekends that we had to deal with the ruckus coming from the informal settlement, but now it's an everyday issue. The loud music just never stops. Even if they do have parties every day, some consideration should be given to us residents who have to put up with this loud disturbance on a daily basis. Despite numerous complaints to our councillor, Mahomed Essop and the City of Tshwane, nothing but empty promises have been made and we are no closer to solving the problem now, than we were a year ago," Thiven added.
"I've honestly lost count of the number of emails, calls and messages to the City of Tshwane to take action. Even with us residents having formed a group to take our grievances to the council, they still turned a deaf ear to our plight. Every time, we get the same reply that 'someone would investigate it'. We even met representatives from Itireleng and some tavern owners who undertook to tone down the sound, especially on weekdays, but to no avail," Thiven added.
Another irked resident, Samantha Urvashi Govender (28), said that she recently logged another complaint, but received no response from the council. "Last year, we were told by a council official that the Metro Police would investigate and then warn the implicated tavern owners about their loud music, but obviously no such action has been taken. The politicians are just lazy to do what must be done, but when its election time they want to be seen by the community, pretending to care for the public. This is not fair at all, especially to us residents who have appealed time and time again, with our pleas just falling on deaf ears. We are just fed up with this whole ‘no service delivery’," said the enraged Bengal Street mother.
Councillor Mahomed Essop told the Laudium Sun that he had reported the matter to the relevant authorities many times and that he too is frustrated by the lack of decisive action.
Irked Ext. 3 resident, Thiven Naidoo says the ruckus from Itireleng taverns has become intolerable.
Totally fed-up with the noise: Samantha Govender.
