As part of the Laudium community's stand with Intellectual Disability Awareness Month, Sunrise School hosted their annual sports event for children with special needs this past Tuesday, March 20.
Sunrise School, located on Maxwell Road (entrance of Laudium), caters to children with mental disabilities, aiming to use the annual sports event as a day of fun and games for these children, who are often excluded in other activities, and to build recognition for their sports achievements by rewarding excelling students with medals and other prizes. Three under 14 teams from Sunrise, namely the Lions (YELLOW), Tigers (RED) and Leopards (GREEN), were in action against each other and blew the audience away with their game smarts. Sunrise School parents and educators gave their full support and cheered the learners along. Three boys did exceptionally well, consistently outdoing their opponents as they proudly walked away with medals. Speaking to the Laudium Sun, the organiser of Sunrise School's Annual Sports Event, Shayima Yunus, said, “We're extremely proud of all the learners who participated and support them all the way. Sunrise School Principal, Ashmini Lewis, thanked the Laudium Sun, Affinity Hiring, KFC Laudium, and all the staff members and parents who contributed to making this a special day for our learners.”
