Tamil Federation of Gauteng hosts senior citizens day

The Tamil Federation of Gauteng (TFG) - together with its affiliate, the Laudium Tamil Association (LTA) celebrated Human Right's Day last Wednesday, by hosting a luncheon in appreciation of senior citizens in the community.

Former US president, Ronald Reagan said: "For all they have achieved throughout their life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute."

The TFG hosted a senior citizens day in Laudium on March 21 at the Himalaya School Hall on Bengal Street. Senior citizens attended the appreciation day and socialized after enjoying a scrumptious luncheon.

Speaking to the Laudium Sun, Kovelin Veramoothoo of the TFG of Gauteng said: "This day was created to afford us the opportunity to support, honour and show appreciation to our senior citizens as well as to show recognition for their achievements and the contributions they have made to our communities."

He added, “Our gratitude can be shown by ensuring our communities are places where older people can participate to the fullest. It must also be an environment where they can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance and services they need to continue living their lives with independence and dignity. Celebrate our senior citizens by spending some time with seniors you know. This can be your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles or even neighbours. Let them know they are loved and appreciated. You can even pay your local old age home or retirement village a visit, and alleviate an elderly resident's loneliness by sharing your smile and time with those who do not always receive visitors,” Kovelin concluded.
