Born on November 25, 1926, to Valliamma and Rathnasamy Dharmalingham of the old Asiatic Bazaar, Mrs Rajambal Kollapen, Aunty Thanga, as she was affectionately known, passed on last Wednesday night (January 10). Aunty Thanga leaves behind a huge void, not only in the hearts of her family and friends, but also the community at large, to whom she was not only a great source of inspiration, but also a leader in culture, care for the aged and altruism. Her grace, dignity, compassion and philanthropy left all who encountered her in awe of her humble, yet powerful demeanour, as she firmly asserted her opinion and beliefs in regard to women's rights and improving the lives of our elders.

“Aunty Thanga, will be greatly missed, but I have no doubt that her benevolent spirit will continue to echo throughout our community for many years to come. The few but precious interactions we had over the years, will certainly be fondly etched on my mind and her vibrance and selflessness will always remain an inspiration to me.”

Sadly missed, but always remembered, mother of the community, Mrs Rajambal Kollapen (affectionately known as Aunty Thanga) with her devoted son, community activist, Judge Jody Kollapen.
