Arrested for possession of state-issued bullet proof vest

A 45-year-old man appeared in the Lenasia Magistrates' Court on a charge of possession of suspected stolen state property.

On Tuesday, March 6, at about 6.30am, members of the SAPS Taxi Violence Task Team, that is currently deployed in the area to monitor the growing tensions between two rival taxi associations, spotted a group of suspicious looking men gathering in Fourth Streets' Phumla Mqashi, Lenasia South.

The police officers confronted the group and conducted a search. While searching them a 45-year-old man was found to be wearing a bulletproof vest underneath a hooded top he was wearing.

Investigations revealed that the vest belonged to the South African Police Services.

"The suspect failed to provide officers with any reasonable explanation as to how he came in possession of the vest that belonged to the state. The suspect was immediately arrested and will appear in court," said Sergeant Khalipha Mvula of the Lenasia South SAPS.
