Learner injured in Impala Street hit and run

A Greyville Primary School Grade R learner was hit by a vehicle on Impala Street in Lenasia Extension 2, last Friday, April 13.

Eye witnesses say as the Grade R learner ran across the road to get to her school transport, she was hit by a red Ford Figo.

"The child fell, but got up hysterical and tried to run away," said a witness.

The female driver of the Figo, and another motorist got off their vehicles and ran to assist the learner.

"I was able to catch up with the child and calm her down as we waited for the paramedics," the witness said.

The driver of the Figo, left the scene, saying she would return after fetching her daughters from various schools in the area.

" She was told by bystanders not to leave the scene, but refused to listen to them and drove off," the witness added.

However, witnesses had taken down the driver's vehicle registration number, as she did not leave her contact details with anyone.

School principal, Collin Francis and a Saaberie Chishty Ambulance arrived at the scene. The child's parents were contacted and the child was taken to the Chiawelo Clinic in Soweto by Saaberie Chishty Ambulance.

The driver did not return to the scene, but was tracked down.

According to the family, the woman was still in a state of shock, after fetching her children from school.

"She later returned to the scene, but no one was there," said the driver's father.

The child was examined and released by doctors on the same day.

"After our daughter was released from Chiawelo Clinic, we went to the Lenasia SAPS and we opened a case," said the child's father.

According to the father, what angered the family most, was the fact that the woman left the scene before their child could receive medical attention.

"This clearly shows that she did not care about our child's well-being," said the father.

"The woman should have reported the matter to the police. Police are investigating a case of hit and run," said Captain Hector Netshivhodza.
